Colette Avital, an 86-year-old holocaust survivor, former Israeli diplomat and former Knesset member, delivered a deeply disturbing warning in her interview with Christiane Amanpour on PBS.
Avital described the erosion of Israeli democracy, growing police violence against demonstrators, and the destruction of freedom of speech, academia and the press.
Even more disturbing were her accounts of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. She described a case in which settlers reportedly entered a Palestinian village, tied up women and children, took their phones, and stripped and abused a Palestinian man.
These allegations demand serious, independent investigation. No government, army or settler group should be above the law.
Avital's testimony carries particular moral weight. As a holocaust survivor who devoted her life to serving Israel, she understands the terrible consequences of dehumanization and unchecked power.
Israel's security cannot be achieved through occupation, humiliation and violence. The only sustainable path is respect for human rights, democracy, Palestinian self-determination and a genuine political solution.
The world must not remain silent.
